1. THE GOLDEN RULE: A FULL COA, TESTED ON THE FINAL SOLUTION

The only real proof of purity is a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from a reputable, third-party lab. Don’t settle for vague “tested” claims or partial results.

A proper COA should show:

Identity — confirmation it’s actually methylene blue.
Purity — that the final solution is at the labeled strength (for example, a true 1% solution, not something weaker or inconsistent).
Heavy metals testing — lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium.
Microbiology — to rule out harmful bacteria or contamination.
Residual solvents — leftover chemicals from the manufacturing process, which can be harmful if not removed.

And here’s the critical part: testing must be done on the final mixed product in the bottle, not just the raw powder. A clean powder doesn’t guarantee a clean or accurate solution once it’s been dissolved, bottled and shipped.

2. THE SIMPLE LYE + GLUCOSE TEST

Methylene blue has unique chemical properties that make it easy to test at home. One of the simplest ways is the redox test using lye (sodium hydroxide) and glucose:

Add a small amount of methylene blue solution into a clear glass container.
Mix in a pinch of glucose (sugar) and a few drops of lye solution.
Shake gently and watch the reaction.

What should happen?

The solution will turn from blue to clear (colorless) as the methylene blue is reduced.
When left still, oxygen from the air will slowly turn it blue again.
Re-shake and the cycle repeats.

This back-and-forth color change is a simple way to confirm you’re dealing with real methylene blue and not a counterfeit dye.
